Every industry has two companies that publicly can't stand each other but secretly can't stop calling. Amazon and Qualcomm just made it official: Amazon is buying up to $60 billion in Qualcomm's AI chips, and Qualcomm is turning right around and using Amazon's own cloud tools to help design them. It's less a business deal and more two exes still borrowing each other's Wi-Fi.
Here's the arrangement: Qualcomm will supply AWS with custom AI-inference chips and next-generation optical connectivity capable of hitting 1.6 terabits per second, the kind of bandwidth that starts to matter once you're trying to move an entire data center's worth of thinking through a single cable without it catching fire. As part of the deal, Qualcomm is also increasing its own use of AWS and Amazon's Bedrock platform to speed up chip design, meaning the company building processors meant to compete with Amazon's own custom silicon is, at the same time, paying Amazon rent to help build them faster. Nobody in that boardroom seems to find this even slightly awkward.
Qualcomm also handed Amazon warrants worth up to $4 billion, letting the cloud giant buy shares at a fixed price if enough of that $60 billion in chip purchases actually materializes, which is Wall Street's version of a couple getting matching tattoos before the second date. Qualcomm's stock jumped more than 4% on the news, because nothing reassures investors quite like watching two companies hold hands while eyeing the same door.
The real subplot here is Qualcomm trying to claw its way into a data-center market Nvidia currently owns almost entirely, and doing it by getting genuinely cozy with one of the few companies with enough money and server racks to actually matter. Bank of America thinks the CPU side of this market alone could more than double by 2030, so there's real incentive for exes to stay close, even the complicated kind.
Amazon gets the chips. Qualcomm gets the cash and the cloud credits. Whether either of them still respects the other in the morning is, as always in a $60 billion relationship, a question for the lawyers.
