Imagine being single for years, then three of the wealthiest, most eligible people in town all show up at your door the same Tuesday morning, each holding flowers, a noticeably better calendar app, and zero interest in pretending this is a coincidence. That's roughly what just happened to the legal industry, except the suitors are Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, and the flowers are enterprise software contracts nobody asked for but everyone's suddenly very willing to consider.
Google Cloud just unveiled Gemini Enterprise for Legal, its own purpose-built AI platform for law firms, officially joining OpenAI and Anthropic in courting an industry that spent decades being the very last profession to accept so much as a group text. The word doing the heavy lifting here is agentic, meaning the AI doesn't just text back fast, it actually finishes what it said it would: hand it an 800-page merger agreement, ask it to flag every indemnification clause that looks off, and it goes and does the whole job while you're at lunch, no reassurance texts, no ghosting, no follow-up required.
The industry is saying yes to all three at once, frankly, and not being coy about it: 41% of law firms already use generative AI in some form, up from 28% a year earlier, saving lawyers something close to 240 hours a year on the unglamorous parts of the job nobody went to law school dreaming about. But there's real tension underneath the flirting: 78% of corporate clients say AI-driven quality improvements are essential from their outside counsel, only 6% say their firm actually delivers, a satisfaction rate worse than most dating apps, and nearly a third are already eyeing other options, which is a rough thing to hear from someone you thought you had locked down.
Roughly a third of legal professionals using genuinely good AI tools now say they'd turn down a job that didn't offer one, a sentence that used to be reserved for health insurance and dental, and is now apparently a deal-breaker on the first date too.
Google just walked into the room, flowers in hand, and the billable hour looked up from two hundred years of an exclusive relationship with inefficiency, suddenly realizing all three new suitors already know exactly what it's been hiding.
