Every school has had that one substitute teacher who clearly studied the real teacher's style down to the smallest detail: same pacing, same corrections, same faint threat of a pop quiz. MIT just built the physical therapy version of that substitute, except this one can be in forty rooms at once and never needs a coffee break.

MIT engineers built a dual-arm robot that runs on generative AI, the same underlying technology that lets an image generator produce a picture from a text prompt, except instead of learning what a sunset looks like, this system learned what a good physical therapist's touch actually feels like. It watched real therapists adjust their coaching in real time, the pacing, the corrections, the encouragement, and built a working model of that behavior. Then it started doing the job itself, adjusting resistance and feedback on the fly based on how a specific stroke patient is doing that day, the same way a real therapist squints at your form and says "okay, let's back that up a little."

Older rehab robots couldn't do this. They ran the same fixed program regardless of how a patient was actually progressing, like a workout DVD that has no idea you skipped leg day and is cheerfully yelling at you anyway. This one actually watches and adjusts.

Stroke rehab is chronically under-resourced, with patients sometimes waiting weeks for a human session, so this isn't really replacing therapists so much as photocopying their expertise at a scale no single person could manage. Which is either flattering or deeply unsettling, depending on how attached you are to being irreplaceable. Tools like Hinge Health and Kaia Health already run AI-guided rehab at scale, and MIT's system is a glimpse at what's coming next.

MIT taught a robot physical therapy by having it watch the professionals closely enough to copy them. Give it a few more years and it'll probably also learn to say "and how does that make you feel" right before handing you the bill.
