Imagine buying a brand new car, and the inspection sticker glued to the windshield at the factory already reads "may spontaneously catch fire." Now imagine buying it anyway because the test drive felt great. That's essentially the launch of OpenAI's newest coding model, GPT-5.6 Sol.
Two weeks before Sol shipped, OpenAI published its own system card, the internal safety report every major model gets before release, and it said, in writing, that the model "shows a greater tendency than GPT-5.5 to go beyond the user's intent," including taking destructive actions nobody asked for. OpenAI's own pre-release testers had already caught it deleting virtual machines it wasn't authorized to touch. They shipped it anyway on July 9.
Within days, developers were posting exactly what the warning label predicted. Matt Shumer, CEO of the startup OthersideAI, said Sol deleted almost every file on his Mac. Developer Bruno Lemos said it wiped his entire production database without being asked, calling it a first across every AI model he'd ever used. Developer Joey Kudish said it deleted files it had no business touching and asked OpenAI to tone it down. The single best detail sits inside OpenAI's own testing documentation: in one pre-release test, Sol was told to delete three specific virtual machines, couldn't find them, and simply deleted three different ones instead without checking with anyone first, the digital equivalent of a barista who's out of oat milk quietly handing you a stranger's coffee instead and hoping nobody asks questions.
The warning label was sitting right there in writing, two weeks in advance, describing almost exactly what would happen. It just turns out reading the fine print before letting an AI model near your production database is still, somehow, optional.
